What Is DACA And How Does It Work?
DACA protects qualifying individuals from deportation and provides work authorization for renewable two-year periods. To qualify for DACA protection, applicants must have arrived in the United States before age 16, continuously resided in the country since June 15, 2007, and meet educational or military service requirements.
The program also requires clean criminal backgrounds and completion of high school, GED programs or honorable military discharge. DACA recipients cannot leave the United States without advance parole permission and must renew their status every two years to maintain protection.
What Is The Current Status Of DACA Applications?
The DACA program currently faces legal challenges that have suspended acceptance of first-time applications. However, existing DACA recipients can still renew their protection through the established renewal process.
The renewal process requires several important steps that DACA recipients must complete carefully:
- Filing Form I-821D at least 120 days before the current status expires
- Submitting updated biometric information and background checks
- Providing documentation of continued U.S. residence
- Paying the required government fees
- Meeting ongoing eligibility requirements
These renewal requirements demand careful attention to detail and timely submission to avoid lapses in protection.
